Dr. Ramakrishnan says that effective and compassionate patient care can be ensured by empathising with patients, by having a good understanding of their problems, which would include medical, financial as well as social problems (financial problems, and social problems such as loss of job and so on, could occur as an outcome of medical problems).

To ensure effective and compassionate care, Dr. Ramakrishnan says that it is explained in detail to patients as to what is likely to happen with respect to their medical condition, what is the medical expenditure involved and so on. Financial and medical implications are planned for and long-term planning of treatment is carried out.

He says that management of a patient's medical condition is a priority. Management of a patient's medical condition comprises educating the patient about the disease, involvement of the patient in the management of his or her medical condition and ensuring that patients learn how to take care of themselves. He adds that prevention or stabilisation of renal disease would help, to reduce expenses for the patients over the long-term.
