New Initiatives in Urology
• Flexible Cystonephroscope
At NU Hospitals, we utilise the ACN 2-ACMI flexible cystonephroscope. This permits painless cystoscopy (visualisation of the urinary bladder), ureteric stent removals and the stenting of ureters. It is also utilised during PCNL for achieving complete stone clearance by retrieving other smaller calyceal or ureteric calculi. The ACN 2-ACMI flexible cystonephroscope has a 14.6 Fr diameter with a working channel of 6.4 Fr and an active deflection of 180 degrees up and 170 degrees down.
• Flexible Ureteroscope
We also use the DUR-8, flexible ureteroscope. This is utilised for both diagnostic and therapeutic retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS). It can be used for lithotripsy and stone extraction in the ureter or the kidneys. It enables access to the entire renal tract including the lower renal calyx. It also enables detection of pathologies in regions where access is difficult.
- The flexible ureteroscope can be used in diagnostics for:
1. Identifying the causes of haematuria 2. The differential diagnosis of filling defects 3. The observation of ureteral tumours
- It can be used in therapy for the:
1. Removal of calculi / foreign bodies 2. Treatment of ureteral tumours 3. Coagulation of haemorrhages 4. Disintegration of ureteral stones 5. Removal of necrosed papillae
• ESWL
Extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) as the term indicates, are pressure waves that are generated outside the body, which are passed into the body to break stones into small fragments. These fragments then pass out in the urine over a period of time.
We have the Direx-Tripter Compact Machine. It meets a wide range of requirements for the diagnostic and therapeutic treatments of kidney and ureteral stones. The machine utilises a new and revolutionary shock wave generator, the Tri-lien, which is actually three generators in one. The Direx-Tripter Compact Machine is a fluoroscopic-based electrohydraulic lithotripter. Stone localisation and patient positioning are performed with the aid of a computerised system.

• Paediatric Endoscopes
The entire gamut of paediatric endoscopes for both the upper and lower tracts is available. These include cystoscopy, resectoscope, urethrotome, ureteroscope and nephroscope. We are one of the few centres who are equipped to operate on the entire range of paediatric urology disorders.

• Laparoscopic Urology
Laparoscopy has revolutionised surgery by providing the means to perform minimally access (keyhole) surgery. A wide range of laparoscopic surgeries is performed. We are one of the few hospitals performing laparoscopic live donor nephrectomies, apart from adrenalectomies, renal cyst decortications, ureterolithotomy, nephrectomy, radical nephrectomy, etc.
