Gen-Next Versius Robotic Surgery System at NU Hospitals, Bengaluru
NU Hospitals became the first Nephro-Urology, Fertility Super Specialty Hospital in the country to introduce "Versius Robotic Surgical System" The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Director Prof. Govindan Rangarajan and Manipal Global Education Chairman Padma Shri TV Mohandas Pai inaugurated the ultramodern "Versius Robotic Surgical System" at NU Hospitals on Saturday. With this, NU Hospitals has became the first NephroUrology, Fertility Super Specialty Hospital in India to introduce the "Versius Robotic Surgical System". Speaking on the occasion, Prof Govindan Rangarajan said that this Gen-Next Robotic Surgery was a boon to patients not just in Bengaluru but across the country. The Versius Robotic Surgical System has been designed to enable surgeons to perform more minimal access surgeries, so that more patients can have access to this treatment. Congratulating NU Hospitals for launching this breakthrough technology, Shri TV Mohandas Pai said, "We need these global technologies in our city to help patients to get world class treatment."
FUTURISTIC ROBOTIC SURGERY
Robotic surgery is conducted by a system where the surgeon sits at a console away from the patient on the operation table and when he moves the joystick (Controller) the instruments inside the body of the patient moves. This helps in greater precision during the surgery, said Dr Prasanna Venkatesh MK (Senior Consultant-Paediatric Urologist, Robotic and Renal Transplant Surgeon and Managing Director of NU Hospitals). "It is the future as robotics will be used for complex procedures. For patients, robotic surgery means lesser pain, no scars and early recovery. We are introducing robotic surgery so that we can do more complex surgeries by minimally invasive techniques."

The Robotic surgical system only assists the actual surgical procedure. The robot is ompletely manoeuvred and operated by the surgeon from the console. Incisions are made on the body
through which the arms of the robots (three or more depending on the complexity of surgery) are inserted. A magnified 3D view of the organs is also enabled since there is a special camera
which allows the surgeon to monitor the process more precisely.

LAPARASCOPY V/S ROBOTICS
In laparoscopy, the instruments are placed through small cuts on the body. However the similarity ends here. Robot instruments are indirectly manipulated by the surgeon and have a hugely improved range of motion compared to the laparoscopy instruments. This range of motion augmented by the enhanced level of control allows for very precise surgery of critical organs/areas. The 3D vision allows the surgeon to appreciate finer details and hence avoiding inadvertent injuries as compared to the 2D vision of laparoscopy.
