Kidney Transplant

Kidney transplant surgery is carried out for patients with end-stage renal (kidney) failure, that is when the kidney function is irreversibly reduced to less than 15% of normal.

Procedure:

During a kidney transplant, the donor’s kidney is placed in a new position, in the right or left lower quadrant of the patient’s abdomen. The damaged kidneys of the patient are not removed unless required in certain circumstances. After the transplant surgery, the patient will have to take immunosuppressive drugs life-long to prevent rejection from the newly transplanted kidney.

Types of Kidney Transplant:

NU Hospitals has been performing both live-related kidney transplants (renal transplants) as well as cadaveric transplants with results of international standards. Our team of kidney transplant specialists consists of those who have been in this field for over two decades.

There are two main types of kidney transplants: deceased donor (cadaveric transplants) and living-donor.

Living-donor transplants use kidneys from living donors. This type of kidney transplant is performed at our centre when the following relatives of the patient, i.e. the father, mother, siblings, children, or spouse of the patient, agree to voluntarily donate a kidney.

Living-donor transplants offer several advantages over deceased-donor transplants, including a shorter waiting time and a better chance of long-term kidney survival.

Deceased-donor transplants use kidneys from people who have died. These kidneys are typically retrieved from organ donors who have agreed to donate their organs after death. Patients at our hospital are also enrolled in the cadaver transplant program under the support of The Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka (ZCCK) for Organ Transplantation.

High Risk Kidney Transplants

  • ABO incompatibility: This occurs when the blood types of the donor and recipient are not compatible. ABO-incompatible transplants are more complex and require special immunosuppressive medications.
  • Positive crossmatch: This occurs when the recipient's immune system reacts to the donor's kidney. Positive crossmatch transplants are very rare.
  • Swap kidney transplant: This is a type of living-donor transplant in which two incompatible donor-recipient pairs exchange kidneys. It is a complex process that requires careful matching of donors and recipients.

Complexities of Kidney Transplant

Kidney transplantation is a complex surgery that carries several risks and complications. Some of the most common complications include:
  • Rejection: The recipient's body may reject the new kidney. This is a serious complication that can lead to kidney failure but it is controlled by immunosuppressants.
  • Infection: Kidney transplant recipients are at an increased risk of infection, especially during the first few months after surgery.
  • Bleeding: Bleeding is a common complication of any surgery, and kidney transplantation is no exception.
  • Urinary tract problems: Problems with the urinary tract, such as blockages or leaks, can occur after kidney transplantation.

Despite the complexities, kidney transplantation is a life-saving surgery that can offer many benefits to people with kidney failure.
