Dr. Vasan says that compassionate patient care involves protecting the patient's right to information as well as the patient's right to the treatment choice so that he or she makes a sound and informed decision.
He says that ensuring transparency of medical information with respect to the patient by providing him or her with the right information at the right time, and ensuring that the doctor is easily accessible to the patient are two fundamental aspects of medical care that are critical. This helps the patient in understanding his or her medical condition and enables him or her to make a sound and informed choice. This results in patient care that is compassionate and truthful.
For ensuring effective delivery of patient care, a doctor should be sound in his subject, sound in the choices he or she makes, must have good communication skills, and should spend time with the patient. He or she should keep abreast with the rapid advances in science and technology in the field of medicine by being up-to-date in both the skill aspect as well as the content aspect of these medical advances. The doctor should also be up-to-date with respect to other treatment modalities. Establishing and following standard operating protocols and ensuring quality checks at various levels are two other measures for ensuring effective delivery of patient care. | |
