Prostate Cancer: Early Detection and Advanced Treatments

Home / Conditions and treatments / Prostate Cancer: Early Detection and Advanced Treatments

Prostate cancer is among the most common type of cancer that is affecting men all around the world. It is a cancer that develops in the prostate. The prostate is a small walnut-like gland located right below the bladder only in Males. It produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and helps to transport sperm.

Prostate cancer becomes life-threatening in advanced stages. However, detecting early signs of prostate cancer and advanced prostate cancer treatments have significantly improved survival rates in men. Early detection can prevent deaths due to prostate cancer.

Follow through the blog to learn more about the signs, treatments, and prostate cancer survival rates.

Early Signs and Symptoms of Prostate Cancer

Early detection of prostate cancer is key when it comes to successful treatment. Prostate cancer typically does not project any noticeable symptoms in the early stages. However, as the disease progresses the symptoms start to unfold.

Recognizing these early signs of prostate cancer can help to diagnose the disease before it develops into something severe.

Some common signs of prostate cancer can be:

Frequent urination and difficulty in passing urine sometimes

Pain, discomfort, or burning sensation during urination

     Painful ejaculation

     Blood in urine or semen

Pain in the lower back, hips, or pelvic region

     Weak or interrupted urine flow

Unexplained loss of weight and appetite

Although these symptoms do not particularly signify early signs of prostate cancer, they might indicate an underlying issue. If you are experiencing any of the above-mentioned symptoms, consult your healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis.

Even if you do not have any symptoms of prostate cancer, it's suggested to do a screening blood test called “PSA” test especially for those individuals above 55 yrs of age and / or who have a family history of prostate cancer in their siblings, father or uncle.

Prostate Cancer Treatment Options

If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer several prostate cancer treatment options are available. One thing about prostate cancer is it is a very slowly growing cancer compared to other cancers in the body and so there are multiple treatment options needed during the course of the treatment.

However, it depends on the stage of the cancer, the age of the patient, and several other factors.

The major treatment options for prostate cancer include:

     Surgery

Surgery helps to remove the prostate gland. This is a common procedure that is usually preferred for localized prostate cancer (one which is confined only to prostate) .

     Hormone Therapy

Hormone therapy helps to reduce the level of testosterone in the male body. Testosterone is a hormone that allows prostate cancer cells to grow.

     Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is typically a choice for advanced cancer. It utilizes drugs to slow down or kill the cancerous cells in your body.

     Active Surveillance

This is done in very low risk cancers  which usually do not need an immediate treatment and hence these patients are advised to follow up regularly.

Robotic Surgery for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer robotic surgery is one of the most advanced treatments for prostate cancer. Robot-assisted prostatectomy is a minimally invasive procedure, where your prostate gland is removed using a robotic arm, assisted by a surgeon.

Prostate cancer robotic surgery has several benefits over traditional surgery:

     Precision due to 3D vision

Robotic surgery facilitates better precision. This helps to identify and preserve the vital structures in your body such as your nerves and blood vessels while doing the main surgery.

     Smaller Incisions

Prostate cancer robotic surgery can be performed through smaller incisions. This causes less pain, provides you with quicker recovery, and also reduces scarring.

     Faster Recovery

Patients who follow through with robotic surgery experience shorter hospital stays. They also recover quickly in comparison to traditional surgery.

     Reduced Risk of Complications

Robotic surgery reduces the risk of blood loss and infection.

While robotic surgery is quite an effective treatment for prostate cancer, not all patients are suitable candidates for the treatment plan.

You must discuss treatment options with your Uro oncologist before you choose one.

Advanced Prostate Cancer Treatments

If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and are looking out for advanced prostate cancer treatments, the treatment options include:

     Hormone Therapy

     Chemotherapy

     Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy treatment helps boost your body's immune system to help fight cancer. These medicines will help the body’s immune system to identify and attack the tumor cells.

     Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy attacks specific cancer cells in your body while minimizing damage to the healthy cells.

During the advanced stages of prostate cancer, treatment options might involve a combination of therapies. The patient should discuss possible treatment plans with their oncologists.

Prostate Cancer Survival Rates and Prognosis

Over the years, due to early detection and medical innovations prostate cancer survival rates have greatly improved. However, it varies depending on the stage at which cancer is diagnosed and various other factors.

The sooner the detection the better the prognosis.

Key Facts and Figures on Prostate Cancer Survival

Localized prostate cancer: The 5-year survival rate for men with localized prostate cancer is 90-100%. It signifies that most men diagnosed at the early stages live without cancer at least for five more years.

Regional prostate cancer: The survival; rate drops to 99%, as the cancer progresses to the nearby areas.

PSA testing for prostate cancer

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA testing for prostate cancer) is a blood test that is specifically used to screen for prostate cancer.

High levels of PSA might be an indication of prostate cancer.  However, it can also indicate other medical conditions such as an enlarged prostate or prostatitis.

Regular PSA testing for prostate cancer is highly recommended for men who are above the age of 50 or have a family history of prostate cancer. If you have elevated PSA levels you might require further testing such as biopsy.

Even though prostate cancer is treatable, understanding the early signs and prostate cancer treatment options that are available to you can significantly impact your outcome.

Early detection and appropriate intervention are key when it comes to successful treatment and better outcomes.
